History
The area was part of a large lake and has changed dramatically since the early 1800's. By the 1930's only a small part of the lake remained. The remainder of the lake was used for sugar cane cultivation. Closure of the Mt Edgecombe Sugar Mill and Effingham Brickworks in the early 1990's resulted in the development of the business estate, primarily due to its locality. The bulk of the area was owned by the Tongaat Hulett Group. Smaller portions owned by Propnet, eThekwini Municipality and SANRAL and were incorporated into the Estate. It was then decided to construct a new link road (Queen Nandi Drive) between the North Coast Road in Briardene and KwaMashu. Hence the development of Riverhorse Valley Business Estate.
