Maydon Wharf is the key cargo handling facility in Durban. It is responsible for handling the majority of the country's imports and exports, making it a vital part of the local economy. Maydon Wharf is also home to a busy container terminal, which sees a constant stream of ships coming and going. Unfortunately it has a poor and congested immediate road network however, Maydon Wharf is positioned relatively close to all the arterial routes and once out of the immediate area, distribute of cargo around the province and rest South Africa is relatively easy. History

When a party of British men from the Cape Colony decided to settle on the shores of the Bay of Natal in 1824 to establish a Trading Post, the modern Port of Durban was formed. Durban Harbour still resembles the original Bay's shape. Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama, discovered the Bay in 1497. Soon, it became a major point of access that was conveniently located between Algoa Bay and Maputo Bay.
