Congella, Durban

The Congella Industrial node is situated between the residential area of Glenwood and Maydon Wharf. Due to its close proximity to the Durban Port, this area has become an important industrial zone for the city, containing a number of key businesses. The suburb is bisected by the M4 Southern Freeway and is made up of distribution facilities and large warehousing. The area has easy access to the Durban CBD and the surrounding suburbs. History

The first power station to be built by Eskom was the Congella Power Station in Durban. Congella was built to supply the growing needs of the Durban Corporation. The Railway Administration decided to extend the station immediately to electrify the Durban to Pietermaritzburg line. Durban, is the capital city of the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, and in addition to its cultural and commercial value, there is also rich history and heritage. One of these historical gems is the Old Fort which was a camp occupied by the British soldiers during the battle of Congella. After the city of Durban's centenary commemoration, 138 years after the battle of Congella, the South African Defence Force (SADF) Citizen Force unit, the Congella Regiment, was formed.
